General outlines
Program Outlines
- The residency program consists of 3 full years of training.
- Residents should rotate in all divisions of the specialty department.
- Training should be directed towards acquiring clinical skills, up to date knowledge, basics of specialty investigations and procedures.
- Provisionally rotations will be as follows:
- Cardiology Residency:
1 st year:
- 6 months: Basic skills, investigations, ACLS course, ER training, Department polices and procedures, and therapeutic protocol.
- 6 Months: Wards Training.
2 nd year
- 3 months: non invasive lab.
- 3 months: C.C.U.
- 3 months: cath. lab.
- 3 months: Wards
3 rd year
- 3 months: non invasive lab.
- 3 months: Medical I.C.U.
- 3 months: cath. lab.
- 3 months: Wards
- Critical Care Residency:
1 st year:
- 6 months: General and specific orientation, Basic skills, ACLS course, FCCS course, ER training, Department polices and procedures, and therapeutic protocols.
- 6 Months: Critical care units rotation.
2 nd year
- 3 months: Anesthesia and cardiac surgery.
- 3 months: Cardiology.
- 3 months: Internal medicine and Nephrology.
- 3 months: Neurology, Hepatology-Liver Transplant and oncology.
3 rd year
- 4 months: Medical ICU.
- 4 months: Surgical ICU.
- 4 months: Coronary ICU.
- Pediatrics residency
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Infection Control
- Residents will work 5 days/ week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They will have one day off (either Saturday or Thursday) in addition to Friday. During day off, residents will have academic tasks that they should achieve.
- Each resident will have 6 on call night shifts per month.
- (Rotation: every 5th night).
- Residents will have a detailed description of their duties and privileges. They should stick to their responsibilities very tightly.
- They should attend all rounds, consultations, MDM and ER calls.
- They should have two rounds on patients/day one in the morning and one in afternoon.
- Each patient admitted to hospital will be assigned to a certain resident, who should follow him from his admission till being discharged. The resident will be responsible for completeness of all patients' documents. He should make sure that all orders are properly done.
- During the 1st 6 months, they are not allowed to give either verbal or written orders but they can write down their own notes. These notes are not replacing registrar, fellow or senior resident notes.
- During the 2nd half of the first year, they can write admission sheets, notes and orders but it will not be valid until being signed and stamped by registrars, fellows & senior residents. Junior residents will not be allowed to use stamps during the first year.
- During the 2nd and 3 rd year, they will rotate in specialized units, they should follow the policies of these units and stick to their privileges as stated in the detailed program.
- In each period of rotation, a certain syllabus is determined by the program that should be studied by the residents.
Residents should achieve the following certification.
- USMLE
- Master degree
- Number of selected residents is determined by each specialty according to program requirements each year.
- Recruitment will be each year by newspaper advertisement.
- Applying candidates will undergo a thorough selection process.
- Maximum 4 candidates should be selected and 2 others will be selected for waiting list.
- Candidates should be faculty graduated, completed their house officer period and have no military obligation.
- Minimum graduation grade is very good and preferably excellent.
- Evaluation will be according to:
Graduation grade 50% of score (5+) Personal skills 10% of score (1+) DAF exam 20% of score (2+) Interview 20% of score (2+) (10+)
ANNUAL APPRAISAL WILL BE DONE AT THE END OF EACH YEAR.
- Residents who completed the 3 years successfully have the chance to join DAF as fellows for 5 years, once they finished their master degree.
- They will be offered to travel abroad either for observership or a fellowship.
- They will also have the chance to complete their MD degree.
- They will receive recommendation letters and certification of training by the end of the third year.
- February: Advertising.
- Application start: 1st February.
- Application close: End of February.
- Selection, Examination and interview: During March.
- Start orientation: 1st May.
- Start program: 1st June.
- Examination 1st part of Master: within 18 months.
- Examination 2nd part of Master: within the 3 years.
- USMLE examination: March every year.
- Annual leaves: candidates are entitled to an annual vacation 3 weeks/year according to general hospital rules.
- 2nd recruitment might start 1st of September.
11.REFERENCES AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS:
If the candidate is selected for an interview the following documents should be provided at least one week before:
- Personal statement
- Two letters of recommendations
- A copy from the medical diploma
- Photo ID
- Certificate and qualifying exam results.
